Clinical Management of the Removable GNM Orthotic

GNM ORTHOTIC RELINE for the TMD PATIENT with Clayton A. Chan, D.D.S.

GNM ORTHOTIC RELINE for TMD PATIENTS - "Didactic Hands-On"

Description: “Clinical Management of the Removable GNM Orthotic”

Prerequisite Course: Levels 1-4 (A prerequisite for GNM Orthotic Fabrication course)

AGD Subject Code: 180/181 Myofascial Pain/Occlusion, 010 Basic Science/Physiology, 200 Orofacial Pain/Musculoskeletal orofacial pain, 184 Occlusal Adjustment/Therapy

Keys to Occlusal Management of the GNM Orthotic Using K7 Data Clinically

This 2 day didactic hands on course offers an in depth hands on understand how a Gneuromuscular (removable orthotic) occlusion can be resurfaced when occlusal contact or mandibular positioning is lacking stability.  Simple, reproducible techniques and protocols will be presented to regain optimal orthotic function, temporomandibular joint stability and masticatory health. The program is filled with practical tips and information that can be immediately implement when you return to your office.  The focus of this course is to allow the participants to become proficient in the management of removable orthotic TMD patient cases.

Topics of Interest:
  1. Where to add and how to add.
  2. How to manage the bite/occlusion.
  3. How to take an optimal bite and transfer it to resurface the orthotic.
  4. How to close vertical dimension on an optimal myo-trajectory.
  5. How to reduce the disc following emergency GNM techniques and protocols when the initial bite and orthotic just are not good enough!
A time to refine one’s comprehension, practical skills and mastery of form for optimal mandibular function of the phase I GNM orthotic based on Levels 1-7 teachings. No manual will be provided in this hands on didactic program.

NOTE: All attendees are asked to bring: 1) upper and lower cast models of their mouth ready poured and trimmed for review with a 1.5 mm bioacryl shim or orthotic, and 2) bring K7 to run Scan 4/5 used for occlusal resurface and modification procedures on an optimized myo-trajectory.  Evaluation, tips provided with discussion will be part of the learning experience.

What You Will Learn:

  • When to add, where to add and how to add to the orthotic.
  • How to use K7 to determine how the orthotic is on or off the myo-trajectory.
  • How to identify a correct trajectory with an orthotic bite that was questionable.
  • How to take a more optimal bite and transfer it to resurface the orthotic.
  • Resurfacing the orthotic back onto an optimal myo-trajectory.
  • A review of the basics in posterior occlusal anatomy.
  • Understanding the occlusal landmarks in the resurfacing of the acrylic.
  • How to create the occlusal morphology when it was all in globed acrylic.
  • How to resurface back to proper anatomical form and function.
  • How to manage the patients mandible during TENS to recapture the deficient posterior VDO.
  • How to manage the bite and more.
  • How to reduce the disc when the initial bite is not good enough.

Course Objectives:

Every dentist needs to know how to manage the occlusal anatomy from scratch for each of these 4 type of occlusal relationships:

  1. Cross bite
  2. End to end bite
  3. Class II div 2
  4. Anterior open bites
  5. Class I dental relationship (standard)

Q & A, discussions, demonstration and having the doctors resurface their own removable orthotics will add to the clinical skills and confidence of each attendee.

Dr. Chan received his laboratory dental technology education and training from the DTI (Dental Laboratory Institute, Orange, CA).  Furthering career he graduated from Loma Linda University, School of Dentistry in Loma, Linda, CA.  Having practiced general dentistry for over 35+ year and studied at the Taylor Dental Institute, Rancho Sante Fe, CA he  gained expertise, skill, knowledge and understanding in gnathologics, neuromuscular K7 instrumentation.  As a wet fingered clinician he has applied his training in comprehensive restorative, orthodontic/orthopedics and myofacial pain/TMD problems.

Dr. Chan has been the foremost leader and pioneer in gneuromuscular (GNM) occlusion principles.  His teachings have afforded dentist from around the world to implement clinical occlusal techniques that have achieved outstanding results in “real world” dental practices. His leadership and pioneering role in both “gneuromuscular” (GNM) and neuromuscular (NM) occlusion has been recognized, by his peers, for his ability to deliver outstanding care to his patients as well as present the most advanced principles dentistry and the treatment of TMD patients. Dr. Chan shows and demonstrates live proven clinical techniques that you will learn, be inspired, become skilled, successful, profitable and confident in integrating the GNM concepts into your dental practice.
